FCI-Standard N° 347
Our dogs are registered with the FEDERATION CYNOLOGIQUE INTERNATIONALE (FCI). In 2011 the FCI validated the standards for the White Swiss Shepherd in FCI-Standard #347. All our dogs comply (physically) with this standard.
Behavior and temperament White Swiss Shepherd
Because there is a lot of incorrect information on the internet about the behavior of this breed, I think it is good to pay special attention to this on this page. Especially to avoid disappointments when your pup doesn't meet up with what is written.
According to the FCI-standard the behavior and temperament of the White Swiss Shepherd is:
Lively and balanced temperament, enjoys action, attentive with good ability to be trained. Friendly and discreet. High social competence and devoted to his owner. Never afraid or aggressive without provocation. A joyful and easy to teach working and sporting dog with capability for all round education. High social competence allows for a marked ability to adapt and integrate to all kinds of social events and situations.
With most I agree however I have some doubts about that this breed is 'never afraid without provocation'. I also miss the character traits such as shyness, even aloof that you often see in this breed. And I don't say that these are negative traits, some of you choose this breed because of these traits, but it is something to take into consideration when you decide to buy a White Swiss Shepherd.
So if you want a breed that has the appearance of a GSD but is much more mellow, then the Swiss Shepherd is for you. This dog can be more clingy towards the owner, which can be good and bad. While this breed does well around children, if left alone for too long, separation anxiety can start to set in if not properly trained. All four of our dogs can be left alone for half a day easily.
Still, the Berger Blanc Suisse is well-known for her high intelligence. While not preferred for police work, this breed does make an excellent service dog, detection dog and performs well in various dog competitions, like agility, fly ball, dock diving, etc.
That said I know that this breed can exile and be your best companion ever, as long as you put your mind in to it. Look at our dogs, follow my blog or follow me on Facebook and/or Instagram and you’ll see what I mean.
And remember that a dog is not only genes, but also training, environment and the individual. If you’re not sure if this breed is something for you, I recommend to read 'Meet your dog' written by Kim Brophey.
Also when you already decided to go for this breed this book gives you so much insight in who your dog is, that I recommend reading it anyway. And no, I don’t get any money for advertising this read:-)))
