April 11, 2026
The puppies have arrived! Born yesterday April 10, 2026. One boy and 3 girls. The first puppy, Miss Pink was born at 8:30pm and the last puppy, Miss Purple was born 6pm.
It was a very long and emotional day for all of us. I had to take Jane to the vet because she stopped having contractions after 3 puppies and I wanted to know if there were any other puppies left in her belly and if so, if there were complications. There were 2 puppies left, both heart beats strong as they ever could be. So finally Miss Purple was born 6pm (12 hours after the first) alive and kicking. But the last puppy, also a girl, was born this morning and it was too late for her. She didn’t make it.
Jane is doing great and she’s a wonderful mama. Keeping a close eye on her puppies and making sure that they get enough milk. This morning I weighted them all and they all gained weight! So I am very happy with that. These first couple of weeks we monitor their weight daily to make sure that they stay healthy.

April 8, 2026 Jane is showing signs that the puppies are preparing to meet their mother. Over the past two days, she has been panting more frequently, and since this morning, she appears even more uncomfortable. She is constantly looking at me and seeking my comfort and attention, which I of course provide.

April 3, 2026 Jane is still getting bigger and bigger. I sometimes can see her puppies move. Every day I listen with my stethoscope for little heart beats, and sometimes I do think I hear the puppies 'bark' already:-) But that's probably 'wishful thinking'. Anyway we set up the whelping pen an you might think it's too small for BIG Jane, it will fit just perfect. The picture is a little bit out of focus.
And like with all previous litters, again Venture (the stuffed dog named after our first puppy) will be the hugging and comforting buddy for the new puppies. |

Tuesday March 31, 2026
Nine days to go. Jane is getting heavy, she is panting more because of the puppies moving in her belly, But she is still playing ball (no jumping!!! & slower than normal). Jane is getting more food now that the puppies grow, grow and grow. She loves attention, even more than normal and is glued to my side. Tomorrow Martijn & I will set up the puppy whelping box and rearrange our living space, so that Jane can get used to her new sleeping quarters. |

Jane's belly seems to be growing, and she shows early signs of pregnancy like morning sickness and less appetite; two things she NEVER had before. I am pretty confident that she is pregnant however with Jessie I have been wrong a couple of times, so time for Jane to have an ultrasound. Jane is pregnant!!! So happy! We saw at least 4 puppies, but there can be more hiding from us. It's such a wonderful experience to see those little embryos/fetuses 'swimming' around. |

In the first week of February 2026, Jane was in heat, prompting me to begin progesterone measurements. After three measurements, on Saturday, February 7th, her level reached 15ng. I promptly contacted Plavi’s owner, Jennifer, who, along with Plavi, visited us on Sunday to assess the possibility of breeding them. Although Plavi seemed quite interested, Jane was not enthusiastic about the idea.
On Monday, I conducted another progesterone test, and Jennifer and I decided to schedule an artificial insemination (AI) appointment with her reproductive veterinarian, who was located in Richmond. The following morning, Jane, Jessie (who always makes for a pleasant companion during long car rides), and I set off at 6 am and arrived a bit over 8 am. We underwent another progesterone test and other necessary procedures, and it was confirmed that Jane was still capable of breeding, but her window of opportunity was rapidly closing. An hour later, Plavi arrived, and the veterinarian performed the AI procedure. Now, all we had to do was patiently wait and see if Jane became pregnant. |
